WHO WAS CHARLES DREW?

Name: Charles Richard Drew
Born: 1904
Died: 1950
Occupation: Doctor

Drew was born in Washington, D.C. His father, Richard, was a carpet layer and his mother, Nora, a teacher. Drew attended medical school at McGill University in Canada.

Charles pioneering research into blood helped save thousands of lives during World War II. He invented a means of separating plasma from blood, allowing it to be stored for up to a week. A week was far longer than had been possible at the time. Charles helped the British government establish their first national blood bank and worked briefly with the American Red Cross during World War II.

CHARLES' DRAWING EXPLAINED

  • The Background is Morgan State University, at the Hillen Road and East Cold Spring Lane campus. Drew spent two years as a professor of chemistry and football coach at Morgan College (now MSU).

  • On Charle's superhero outfit is the logo of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (ΑΩΑ). Drew achieved membership in 1933.

  • Drew was the assistant director for a pilot national blood banking program and among his innovations were mobile blood donation stations, later called 'bloodmobiles".
  • All blood isn't always red. Crabs have blue blood, Earthworms have green blood and starfish have yellowish blood!

  • Doctors use to use leeches for bloodletting.

  • Our blood contains around gold! Around 0.2 milligrams of it.

  • The word "blood" appears in every play written by Shakespeare.
